Rebooting indymedia - now

  • were did we come from were are we going -

FEEL FREE TO EDIT AND ADD TO THIS #4opens doc

ToDo:

  • organising structure

The original open structure of IMC is still valid - comments please?

idea we could use a open github clone to aganise both the tech and the social side of the reboot?

we used PGA hallmarks as a mission statment at oxford IMC and could use #4opens as a tech statmente just about covers raddical grassroots with out spending a lot of time to rehash it all.

we also have the draft:

PRINCIPLES OF UNITY http://web.archive.org/web/20100313064530/https://docs.indymedia.org/view/Global/PrinciplesOfUnity
  1. The Independent Media Center Network (IMCN) is based upon principles of equality, decentralization and local autonomy. The IMCN is not derived from a centralized bureaucratic process, but from the self-organization of autonomous collectives that recognize the importance in developing a union of networks.

  2. All IMC's consider open exchange of and open access to information a prerequisite to the building of a more free and just society.

[3. All IMC's respect the right of activists who choose not to be photographed or filmed.]

  1. All IMC's, based upon the trust of their contributors and readers, shall utilize open web based publishing, allowing individuals, groups and organizations to express their views, anonymously if desired. **see appendix: Open Publishing document —> still in proposal phase, at this address: lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-communication/2001-April/001707.html lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-communication/2001-April/000874.html

  2. The IMC Network and all local IMC collectives shall be not-for-profit.

  3. All IMC's recognize the importance of process to social change and are committed to the development of non-hierarchical and anti-authoritarian relationships, from interpersonal relationships to group dynamics. Therefore, shall organize themselves collectively and be committed to the principle of consensus decision making and the development of a direct, participatory democratic process] that is transparent to its membership.

  4. [All IMC's recognize that a prerequisite for participation in the decision making process of each local group is the contribution of an individual's labor to the group.]

  5. All IMC's are committed to caring for one another and our respective communities both collectively and as individuals and will promote the sharing of resources including knowledge, skills and equipment.

  6. All IMC's shall be committed to the use of free source code, whenever possible, in order to develop the digital infrastructure, and to increase the independence of the network by not relying on proprietary software.

  7. All IMC's shall be committed to the principle of human equality, and shall not discriminate, including discrimination based upon race, gender, age, class or sexual orientation. Recognizing the vast cultural traditions within the network, we are committed to building [diversity] within our localities.

  • open standards support

https://activitypub.rocks/ and https://scuttlebutt.nz/ are both good format fits and complementary for an indymedia reboot. both have good existing apps for mobile use. My thought is to bridge them and implement both to medat the fluffy/spiky debate. RSS and atom can bring in legacy sites and projects.

  • tech/servers

open hardware is not easy.

  • admins

  • outreach

  • Media production/training

Bring together people here in Lisbon

  • to remember and celebrate n30, seattle & start of indymedia

  • discuss how communication tools, spaces, communities have developed and failed since then

  • discuss what exists today to help move things forward.. (we have tools, but not using them well enough yet)

N30 & 20 20 years after "the day that permane ntly changed the political landscape of globalisation" in Seattle on November 30th 1999, a global community will reflect, remember, rebuild, reboot the #Indymedia project

A gathering on the same subject in Berlin Asymmetrical Media and the 20th anniv. of Indymedia. https://radar.squat.net/en/node/348729

A gathering in The USA Before there was social media, there was indymedia.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of when the first Independent Media Center came to life amid clouds of tear gas, as hundreds of volunteer reporters documented protests against the World Trade Organization in Seattle, starting on November 30, 1999. That week indymedia.org received 1.5 million visitors. It was the first node in a global citizen journalist movement that encouraged people to determine what was news and report and comment on it themselves. http://indy20.dangerousmedia.org/ (Houston)

donblair: we'll be gathering in the US on Nov 30th at Artisan's Asylum, a makerspace in Somerville, MA

Lisbon, Portugal - From Seattle to Madrid

The day before there's the 4th student climate strike..This time Greta Thunberg is scheduled to arrive by boat, attend and the youth will have a climate assembly in the Portuguese parliament, which some months back declared 'climate emergency'.

Proposal: Hour 1 - Shorts, docs, vids about seattle and the indymeida network and communication experiments Hour 2 - a multi nodal panel discussion (4 speakers x 15 minutes / 5 speakers x 12 minutes / 6 speakers x 10 minutes - speakers speak from different countries Hour 3 - Questions and answers

Hour 2 and 3 will be live streamed on net and radio, and we hope to be played live by some local community radio stations.

https://edgecollective.io/indyme…/hamish_indymedia_cop25.mp3 Got a few small bits wrong as didn't prep for the interview and lots of distractions going on. A insiders view of reboot #indymedia

Chat applications for live comm / coordination:

  • https://cabal.chat -- fully decentralized chat application -- work in progress but very promising & fun to experiment with
  • https://delta.chat/en/ -- alternative to whatsapp that works on mobile and desktop and uses your email server. really cool -- end-to-end encryption, but no central control, all your messages stay on your device, works low bandwidth we could just use the chat one the side here then move perment links and ideas to the pad etc.

Misc. Notes / Ideas

  • What does the future of media look like, if we're looking for alternatives to corporate outlets like FB / Google?

it's built on a rebooted digital commons as a first step and a soled good UI p2p infrastructure as a second step

  • It's actually really difficult to offer the same level of immediate connection and service and bandwidth as FB / Google / Amazon without having massive server farms -- a huge technical challenge, requires lots of energy and resources

this is a solved social and technical problem already "activitypub" and federation deals with this issue.

  • Alternatively, one can start to migrate towards "peer to peer" networks, where resources / availability scales up with the number of people participating, because "every client is also a server

"yep this would be a good second step.

  • But even then, simultaneous communication can be a challenge -- there are different timezones internationally, and with a tumultuous future of climate crisis / political unrest, not everyone can get online at the same time
  • So I think there's an argument that 'the future is decentralized and asyncronous' -- we should attempt live connections when we can, but we should also look to develop a culture of sending messages, as a group, to other groups elsewhere, who review them 'offline' and respond ... [just a thought here]

The indymedia is a project of social technology if you are anti tech then the is a limited role inside the project. Best to just say BLOCK a lot so people can navigate round you as with out tech this is no indymedia project.

The scuttlebutt project and community is a really good fit for indymedia. It's a decentralized social media protocol and the community creating it are very aligned with indymedia.

yep it would be a good publishing tool to feed into a wider network. is the any tools inprocess for bridging scuttlebutt to activertypub and activertypub to scuttlebutt - would be usefull to give people the chance to bridge the two worlds. And would be a step useing both to reboot indymedia. then its not a geek fight ;)
