The background RSS daemon updates every 20 mins, so the longest theoretical latency currently is 40 mins between send and receive on two instances. That frequency could be changed, but it probably doesn't need to be very rapid, and keeping it slow reduces strain on servers.
When you're running on an SBC one thing you don't want it doing is sending or receiving data too frequently.
The AP news articles provide both redundancy and are also an anchor to add things like tags, citations or editorial comment to. Direct linking negates the possibility of, for example, warning about the content of the linked to article.
